Golden plains, starlit sky.

Portugal's largest region: plains, cork oaks, whitewashed villages and a wild Atlantic coast. This is where Lisbon escapes to: Comporta for coastal chic, Évora for UNESCO heritage, the herdades for slow living and the most starlit sky in Europe.

Section 01 — Positioning

The Alentejo is one third of Portugal and the most starlit sky in Europe.

Portugal's largest region unfurls golden plains, cork oaks, whitewashed villages and a wild Atlantic coast. This is where Lisbon retreats: to Comporta for coastal chic, Évora for UNESCO heritage, the country herdades for slow living, powerful wines and the nights of the world's first certified Dark Sky Reserve. An accessible 'slow luxury' signature, one to two hours from the capital.

Section 02 — Key facts

The plains, the sky, the table.

Three readings of the Alentejo: the heritage of Évora and its villages, the starlit Alqueva lake, the wines and the way of life.

i.

Plains & heritage.

The country's largest region reads in horizons.

  • One third of Portuguese territory: golden plains and cork oaks (about 50% of the world's cork)
  • Évora, a UNESCO-listed museum-city: Roman Temple of Diana (1st century), Chapel of Bones
  • Monsaraz, a hilltop medieval village overlooking Lake Alqueva; the Roman ruins of Mirobriga
ii.

The sky & the lake.

  • Lake Alqueva, the world's first certified Dark Sky Reserve (2007)
  • Star-gazing by telescope with an astronomer, dinners under the constellations
  • Solar-boat cruises at sunset, silent navigation
iii.

Wines & way of life.

The Alentejo table is rustic and generous.

  • DOC Alentejo wines: Aragonez, Trincadeira, Alicante Bouschet grapes
  • Iberian black pork (porco preto), Serpa cheese, açorda, migas, Alentejo bread

Section 06 — FAQ

Questions about the Alentejo.

Two recurring questions about the destination since 2024. If yours isn't here, write to us.

01 Why choose the Alentejo over a classic destination?

The Alentejo offers a preserved, exclusive and sensory setting that's still uncrowded, ideal for seminars where disconnection and authenticity come first. Easy access from Lisbon (1 to 2 hours by road), characterful herdade hotels, and an accessible 'slow luxury' signature that sets the destination apart.

02 Comporta or the Algarve for a beach evening?

Comporta is closer to Lisbon (90 minutes), more confidential and boho-chic. The Algarve is easier to reach by direct flight via Faro, and better suited to large groups and golf/resort formats. For an intimate, stylish evening near the capital, Comporta; for a large sunny residential format, the Algarve.
